How long we retain your data

We are committed to protecting the personal data you provide us, and we seek to fully comply with the Data Protection Act 2018.
Collection and use of your personal data
We collect your details when you switch energy supplier or tariff with us. ‘Personal data’ is the information you provide during the completion.
The categories of personal data we may collect:
- Your name
- Your title
- Your date of birth
- Your contact information including email and address and phone number
- Your address and postcode
- Your current supplier, tariff and usage information
We may use your personal data to provide you with information about our latest products and services aimed at helping you save money, including but not limited to helping you switch energy provider at the end of your new fixed term. We will also pass your details to the energy supplier you have chosen to take over your supply.
Reason for processing
Under GDPR our comparison service will use either legitimate interest or explicit consent to process your data.
Legitimate interest –
The data subject will have carried out a positive action by signing the tablet. To agree to marketing by various channels of communication (telephone, email, SMS, postal) from a list of trusted partners and industry sectors who may carry out further communication with you.
Explicit consent –
The data subject will have carried out a positive action by signing the tablet to agree to marketing by various channels of communication (telephone, email, SMS, postal) from a list of specific company brands who may carry out further communication with you.
Trusted Data partners
As well as Dontwastemoney.co.uk, the energy supplier you have chosen to switch to, may contact you by telephone, email, SMS or post.
You are entitled to:
- Access your personal information that is collected by us
- Receive information about us and our purposes for processing your personal data
- Ask us to correct any errors in the information that we hold
- To be forgotten and deleted from our database
- To opt out from any further contact by us or our trusted partners
A certain percentage of surveys will be audited on a monthly basis for compliance purposes where a number of data subjects will be contacted by one of our agents to confirm they completed our survey. This is to ensure all of our data is compliant and in line with GDPR.
The Energy Comparison Service Ltd ensure that all our agents act in a respectful manner, are compliant and respect the GDPR and ICO guidelines when collecting data through a face to face survey. Checks are carried out monthly to make sure safeguard standards are being maintained. We are committed to ensuring agents are able to understand the signs of a vulnerable data subject and are trained to handle such situations with care and respect.
How long do we keep your personal data?
By law personal data must not be kept any longer than necessary for the purpose of marketing. We retain certain types of personal data for occurrences where we may need to refer back to it at a later date or are requested for legal requirements to share the data with authorised persons.
All data collected is stored in a secure environment. The aim is to prevent any data being lost or damaged to ensure it is always protected. All data collected is limited to information that is relevant and necessary and will never be shared for any unauthorised or unlawful use.
Will your be data moved outside the European Economic Area?
You should be aware that some of the data processors may be based outside of the European Economic Area, whose laws may have a different standard of protection to UK laws. However, we will not release your data to any untrusted partners or prior to doing the adequate due diligence checks to ensure their compliance with the standards of the Data Protection Act 2018. These data processing agreements are legally binding model clauses.
With regard to processing your data from the energy switch our agency Digital Wave Solutions (ICO reg: ZA103704) are the data processor and we will carry out regular checks to ensure they comply with the GDPR and ICO guidelines
If you have received phone calls and would like to opt out of any future marketing from ourselves or our partners, you may do so by contacting email@example.com, by stating you would like to be opted out of the face to face lifestyle survey. As a data subject you have the right to be forgotten, and once your request has been received, we will process it and ensure your number does not receive any further marketing. Opting in is always optional, by signing your name you are providing your consent to receive additional marketing.
For a more general opt out, we would also recommend you go to www.tpsonline.org.uk and register for the Telephone Preference Service (TPS). This is a free service run by the DMA that helps reduce marketing phone calls (apart from where explicit consent has been given). Please note the TPS may take up to 28 days to take effect.
